Skanska and Cemvision enter agreement to reduce the climate footprint in the construction industry
Skanska, one of the world’s leading construction companies, and Cemvision, a pioneer in next-generation cement, have entered into a collaboration to accelerate the transition of the construction sector toward more sustainable building practices. By combining Skanska’s experience in transformative low-carbon construction solutions and Cemvision’s innovative, circular cement technologies, the two parties are taking an important step toward reducing the construction industry’s climate footprint. The collaboration will begin in spring 2025 and is part of Skanska’s strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.

The construction industry accounts for a significant share of global carbon emissions, with production of cement — the binder in concrete— being one of the largest sources. As one of Sweden’s largest concrete producers and one of the world’s largest construction and project development companies, with 26,300 employees, Skanska plays a central role in enabling a more sustainable building sector. Through the collaboration with Cemvision, Skanska sees the potential to scale up a new generation of cement with up to 95 percent lower climate impact compared to traditional Portland cement - without compromising on quality, workability, or strength.

“To accelerate the climate transition in the construction sector, we need both innovative solutions and strategic partnerships. Cemvision’s technology has the potential to reshape the value chain and deliver real impact. At the same time, it is a step in the right direction toward broadening the market offering of alternative binders, which contributes to greater resilience and more secure supply chains,” says Sara Löfgren, Regional Manager at Skanska Concrete.

Circularity as the new standard

Cemvision’s cement is based on a circular production process where industrial byproducts replace newly extracted materials. By reducing the need for limestone and cutting energy consumption through electrified processes, emissions from cement production can be significantly lowered.

“Skanska’s ambition to be a leading player in the construction industry’s climate transition makes them an ideal partner to scale up our technology. The market is increasingly demanding circular and low-carbon materials, and this collaboration is an important step toward a more sustainable construction sector,” says Oscar Hållén, CEO of Cemvision.

The signed letter of intent marks a first step toward a future off-take agreement, in which Skanska can secure access to Cemvision’s groundbreaking cement for broad implementation across its projects. The first pilot projects are planned to begin in the near future.
